Graphic design may be disposable
and that's ok. But when our dreams
become disposable, we should use
graphic design to change them.

The Reject Show ?
--------------------------------------------
Every year the Advertising and Graphic Design department at the School of VISUAL ARTS has
an exhibition showcasing student work. The work is hand-picked by the department chair and
teachers, and because of the limited wall space, a lot of great work is rejected.

The Reject Show was created as a reaction to this annual event and from seeing design become
styles and trends directed by the industry and competitions.

While our classes offer assignments that teach us how to provide solutions to our clientĄ¯s
briefs, most donĄ¯t encourage us to engage in a dialogue about our role as designers in a wider
perspective. If we neglect to create a critical platform to view our work, then we force
ourselves to be treated as mere vehicles of communication for profit.

This is how we started to experiment with those elements New York is known for, high living
expenses, limited space, and lots of poor but creative people. There was a need for an
alternative show, so we collected rejected work and turned it into a show that encouraged
collaboration.
